How to Build a Wardrobe Closet for a Small Room

Measure the available floor space for the wardrobe with a measuring tape. This will help you determine the width and depth of the wardrobe.

Cut four sections of 2-by-4-inch lumber to the width of the wardrobe with a circular saw. Cut an additional four sections equal to the depth of the wardrobe. Miter the ends of the lumber sections at 45-degree angles with a miter saw.

Arrange two width and two depth sections into a rectangle to form the bottom frame plate of the wardrobe. Arrange the remaining sections into a rectangle to form the top frame plate. Using a drill equipped with a screwdriver bit, drive 4-inch wood screws into the corners to secure the plates.

Subtract 4 inches from the finished height of the wardrobe. Cut four sections of 2-by-4-inch lumber to this measurement with a circular saw. These sections form the posts of the wardrobe.

Stand the top and bottom plates on their edges. Place one post between the plates at each corner on the floor. Insert 4-inch wood screws through the plates into the ends of the posts. Turn the frame plates over and repeat this process with the remaining two posts.

Stand the frame upright. Measure the distance between the posts on the sides of the frame. Cut two sections of 2-by-4-inch lumber to this measurement. Install one section directly below the top frame plate on each side with 4-inch wood screws. Drill a 1-inch-diameter hole in the center of both sections using a drill equipped with a 1-inch paddle bit. Cut a 1-inch diameter dowel rod to the width of the wardrobe frame and feed it through the holes to form the hanging rack.

Measure and cut a section of 1/2-inch-thick pine or hardwood with a table saw to fit the top and back of the wardrobe. Attach the top and back to the frame with 2-inch wood screws at 4-inch intervals.

Cut two sections of 1/2-inch-thick pine or hardwood to fit the sides of the wardrobe. Install the sides with 2-inch wood screws. Cut an additional section to fit the front of the wardrobe.

Measure and mark half the width of the front section. Cut the section in half with a table saw to form the wardrobe doors. Install metal hinges at the top and bottom of doors and on the front edges of the wardrobe on both sides. Drill a hole for a pull knob at the vertical center of each door, about 1 inch from where the doors meet, and install a pull knob through each hole.

Cover the screw heads on the outside of the wardrobe with wood putty, using a putty knife to smooth the putty. Paint or stain the wardrobe as desired.
