Memory Foam Tips

Memory foam is a type of mattress topper. It can be purchased as a mattress, with a memory foam top, or separately then placed on top of your existing mattress. Memory form topper also comes in different thicknesses, from 1 inch to 4 inch. The thicker the memory foam, the more support.
  1. Unpacking the Memory Foam

    • Typically a memory foam pad comes vacuumed packed in plastic because of the size and thickness of the pad. For example, a 4 inch memory foam pad is quite heavy and thick so for it to fit inside packaging this must be done. When unpacking the memory foam, be sure you are in a large enough area. Open the box, and remove the pad. Tear open a corner and remove all of the plastic. The memory foam will inflate itself. Place the memory foam either on the bed you intend to use it on, or on the floor.

    Airing Out the Memory Foam

    • Memory foam has a distinct odor to it and may be undesirable to some. The odor is due to the material the memory foam is made of and the manufacturing process. This smell eventually goes away. To speed up this process, leave the memory foam sit out for a few days before putting any bedding back on the bed. It takes about 3 days for the odor to leave the memory foam. If you are not bothered by it, you can proceed with putting the bedding back on.

Replacing the Bedding with the Memory Foam

    • A memory foam pad comes with a removable, washable case. This is to protect the foam padding itself. Follow the manufacturer instructions on how to place your memory foam pad inside the case. You may need someone to help you with this part. Placing the pad in the case is similar to putting a pillow in a pillow case. When the memory foam is inside the case, place it on top of your mattress. You do not need to purchase any special fitted sheets, because the pad should fit with your existing sheets. Make the bed as normally. You may also choose to purchase fasteners for the fitted sheet to secure the memory foam so it does not move out of its place.

    Keeping the Memory Foam Clean

    • The case that the memory foam comes in should protect against the memory foam getting dirty. However, the case is not waterproof so you may want to consider a waterproof fitted sheet in case there are ever any worries of the mattress getting wet. Be sure to wash the case on a regular basis to keep it free of dirt. A good thing to do would be to wash the case whenever you wash the bedding.
