How do I Install and Insert Replacement Windows?

The thought of replacing a window may be troublesome, but two different types of replacement windows exist to make this an easier process: an insert window and full frame window. If the area surrounding the window is not deteriorated or damaged, an insert window provides an easy alternative. When the surrounding area of the window suffers damage or deterioration, a little more work is required and a full frame window install is needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Wood screws
  • Wood shims
  • Window

Instructions

    • 1

Settle on the type of window installation to use then measure the width and height of the window to be replaced. Take measurements from different areas and use the smallest measurement number when ordering the window replacements. Measure at three different points inside the frame for the width and the same for the height.

Inspect the windows after receipt to verify they are the right size and there is no damage or defects prior to installation. If there are any discrepancies, call the supplier and arrange for a replacement. If the window matches the order, then begin the process of removing the old window.

    • 3

Remove the old window, the interior and exterior stops and sash. Remove any hardware or debris that will interfere with the installation of a new window. Make sure any gaps are insulated.

    • 4

Install the new window by setting it in the frame and settling it into position. Use wood shims first for any uneven gaps by placing them between the frame and the window. Level the window and ensure that it is not tweaked in the frame. Secure the window to the frame using wood screws. Be sure to break off the pieces of wood shim that extend beyond the window. Insulate and seal any gaps that may be present between the window and the frame.

Check to ensure the window works by opening and closing it and testing the locks. If the window does not operate properly or the locks do not secure, check to see if the window is level. Make any adjustments necessary and recheck the windows. You may need to remove any screws and readjust the frame and re-install the screws to make this work.

Clean up the work area and dispose of the old windows per the local ordinances.
