The Advantages of Single Hung Windows

Single hung windows, which have a fixed top sash and a bottom sash that can slide up and down, have been the traditional style in American homes since the 1960s. While double hung windows -- which also have a sliding upper sash -- are more versatile, single hung styles have several distinct advantages that make them a favorite choice to this day.

  1. Cost

    • Single hung windows can be significantly cheaper than double hung models. They generally cost between $100 and $200 per window as of 2010, according to Meridian Window, a window installation and replacement provider. Single hung windows typically cost between 30 and 85 percent less than double hung models, according to the Window Replacement Center.

    Security

    • While single and double hung windows have locking mechanisms that are equally secure, double-hung windows can be slightly less secure because they have two locks instead of one, meaning owners are more likely to forget to lock one of the sashes.

    Drafts

    • New single and double hung windows will generally have equally strong seals, and owners shouldn't notice any difference in draftiness between the two models. Over time, however, owners of single hung windows are less likely to have trouble with drafts because cracks developing in the permanent seal is virtually impossible according to Renaissance Windows and Doors.

    Energy Efficiency

    • While both single and double hung windows are considered to be extremely energy efficient, single hung windows are the slightly better option in this category because they have fewer moving parts and are thus less susceptible to leak hot and cool air through their seams.
