How to Refinish Window Trim

Window trim is especially susceptible to aging and fading because of its high exposure to ultraviolet light and condensation. Refinishing your window trim will give your windows new life, but it can be a tricky job. It may be sensible to do the windows in your house over a couple of weekends, rather than trying to do them all at once.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of rubber gloves and clean the window trim thoroughly with deglosser using a nylon scourer. Once cleaned, rinse over with fresh water and a sponge. Dry off with a lint-free cloth then leave to air-dry for about half an hour.

    • 2

Sand the trim with the 150-grit sandpaper, wearing a dust mask to avoid breathing in the particles. Wipe over with the cloth to remove sanding dust from the trim.

    • 3

Mask off the area around the window trim with painter's tape so that the walls stay clean in case of any mishaps.

    • 4

Apply a coat of primer to the trim with the tapered sash brush. This kind of brush allows for much more accurate painting, which is needed on thin areas like window trim. Allow the primer to dry (see the primer can label for approximate drying times) then roughly sand with the 220-grit sandpaper before dusting with the cloth.

    • 5

Apply two coats of paint to the trim, drying and sanding between coats with the 220-grit sandpaper. All the sanding ensures a smooth, satin finish on the trim. Scrape off any paint the gets on the widow glass with the paint scraper.
