How to Drywall Over Metal Braces

Metal braces or studs are a versatile building material for interior walls. They cost less than traditional wood framing lumber, require smaller tools, make less mess and one person can typically install them alone. Metal braces serve the same purpose as wood studs in interior walls by forming the frame of the wall and holding up the drywall. Installing drywall over metal braces is primarily the same job as installing it over wood, and the finishing techniques are identical.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the first sheet of drywall flat against the wall, either vertically or horizontally. Vertical installation is common, but it leaves ceiling-to-floor seams spaced 4 feet apart. Horizontal installation leaves a continuous seam 4 feet above floor level, which is easier to reach and features ceiling-to-floor seams every 8 feet.

    • 2

Center the left and right edges of the drywall sheet over the metal braces.

    • 3

Fasten the drywall to the metal braces with 1 1/4-inch self-tapping drywall screws. Attach the body of the drywall to the braces with screws spaced approximately 8 inches apart along each brace. Position each screw around the perimeter of the sheet approximately 3/8-inch in from the edge.

Butt the next panel against the last, as you would when installing over wood studs, and continue around the room.
