How to Attach Batt Insulation to Walls

Batt insulation is the standard, paperback fiberglass insulation you usually see in new construction or remodeling. It is placed between the studs of the exposed wall, sealing in those cavities, so air cannot be transmitted through the wall after it’s drywalled. Most walls have standard 16-inch-on-center studs, and the batt insulation is designed to fit snugly between them. If your wall configuration is different, go to a home improvement store for the right style of insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the wall next to one of the exposed studs. Lock the tape measure at that measurement. Lay out the tape measure on the floor.

    • 2

Don a dust mask, goggles and cloth gloves.

    • 3

Roll out the batt insulation next to the open tape measure. Set the level across the width of the insulation strip. Press the level down to compress the insulation. Cut the insulation alongside the level with a utility knife.

    • 4

Vertically press the insulation into the space between the first two studs so it fills the space from top to bottom and side to side. Set it so the paper-covered side is facing out into the room.

    • 5

Secure the piece to the studs by shooting staples through the edges of the paper and into the wood of the studs.

    • 6

Repeat the process to fill each space between each pair of studs. Use the knife to cut back the insulation around any obstructions as needed. Drywall directly over the insulation.
