How to Calculate Concrete for Stairs

Concrete is an extremely durable material that can last for several years without requiring repairs. Over time, however, it begins to show signs of deterioration. Cracks and chips are common on old concrete stairs, and prolonged exposure to water can accelerate wear. Minor damage can often be repaired, but it may be more practical to replace badly damaged stairs rather than attempt to repair them. Determining the amount of concrete necessary is critical to estimating the cost of pouring the stairs.

      Measure the width of the stair as expressed in feet with a measuring tape. For example, if the stair is 36 inches wide, covert the inches to feet by dividing 36 inches by 12 inches to reach a result of 3 feet.

      Measure the depth of the stair expressed in feet.

      Measure the thickness of the stair expressed in feet.

      Multiply the three measurements together to determine the cubic footage of the stair. For example if the length of the stair is 3 feet, and the stair is 10 feet wide and 1/3 foot thick, 3 feet multiplied by 10 feet multiplied by 1/3 foot equals 10 cubic feet. Therefore, you need 10 cubic feet of concrete for each step.

      Multiply the cubic footage of one stair by the total number of stairs to determine the total square footage. From the above example, if one stair requires 10 cubic feet of concrete and there are 5 stairs, 10 multiplied by 5 equals 50 cubic feet. Therefore, you need 50 cubic feet of concrete for the five stairs.
