Take pictures of kitchens in friends’ homes or in model homes. Consider lots of ideas before you design a sitting area for your kitchen. Sketch both formal and informal areas for comparison. Look at designer magazines and kitchen design books. Make notes about furniture styles and window treatments you like. Create a sitting area that is a small version of a living room you would like.

Include a fireplace of some type. You can install a wood-burning fireplace, gas logs or an electric fireplace at the center of the sitting area. Think about ways to place appropriate furniture around the fireplace. Include bookcases or a wall unit. Plan to use oversize chairs or a large sofa.

Keep the sitting area neat and attractive. Don’t be tempted to overfurnish it. You don’t want a cluttered look at the end or side of your kitchen. You will need basic furniture around a desk area or storage area. Include a table for drinks or snacks. If there is room, include a small table with chairs for playing board games.

Use family-friendly furniture and accessories. Include special items, such as artwork or furniture that has been in your family for some time. Create a space that encourages bonding and conversation. Don’t have overly formal artwork or furniture.

Design the area around colors and fabrics your entire family will enjoy. Use dark colors and leather to give the room a masculine touch, but also use lighter colors and feminine accessories to balance the room. The area should appeal equally to males and females who relax there.
