How to Install Ridge Board & Rafters

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Ridge Board.

1. Use a tape measure to determine the length of the roof ridge. Cut a piece of ridge board to this measurement.

2. If the ridge board is longer than 8 feet, you will need to splice two or more pieces together. Cut the boards at a 45-degree angle so they will fit together snugly.

Step 2: Install the Ridge Board.

1. Apply a bead of sealant along the top edge of the ridge board.

2. Position the ridge board on top of the roof, centered over the ridge.

3. Secure the ridge board to the roof trusses with nails or screws.

Step 3: Install the Ridge Cap.

1. Measure and cut the ridge cap to the length of the ridge board.

2. Apply a bead of sealant along the underside of the ridge cap.

3. Position the ridge cap over the ridge board, centered over the nails or screws.

4. Secure the ridge cap to the ridge board with nails or screws.

Step 4: Install the Ridge Vents.

1. If you are installing ridge vents, you will need to do this before installing the ridge cap.

2. Measure and cut the ridge vents to the length of the ridge.

3. Apply a bead of sealant around the edges of the ridge vent.

4. Position the ridge vent on top of the roof, centered over the ridge board.

5. Secure the ridge vent to the roof trusses with nails or screws.

Step 5: Finish the Ridge.

1. Once the ridge board, cap, and vents are installed, you can finish the ridge by applying paint or stain.

2. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before allowing the roof to be walked on.
