Ensure the concrete is completely clean before resurfacing. One of the most important resurfacing techniques is the stripping procedure where all the oils, dirt, grease, sealers and paints are completely removed. New layers of concrete cannot bond to these surface materials. If your surface layer is damaged, you can strip off the top layer of concrete instead.
You will need a cement mixture to use for the resurfacing layer if you want to restore the concrete to its original condition. Begin by applying a layer of cement paste to your stripped layer, which helps the new layer bond more completely to the old foundation. The smoother the mixture of concrete, the better. Mix three parts sand with one part cement, and add only enough water to make the mixture like a thick mortar.
Alternative types of resurfacing can actually create designs on the concrete. Decorative color is common. This process is usually performed through acids or pigments. Acid etching is the process of staining the top layer of the concrete and then sealing it to keep the stained color from leeching out, which can be performed on old concrete layers but works best on a fresh layer. Pigments are mixed in with the concrete itself to change the color throughout the new layer.
Decorative engraving is like coloring but changes the shape of the concrete while it is still wet. You can buy mats and designs that you can press into the new concrete to create tile and border shapes. You can layer your old concrete with an epoxy layer that can hold patterns and color combinations very easily.
