Research the major types of home insulation that are available. Fiberglass insulation does not shrink over time, keeps bugs out and is readily available, but it has been linked to some health risks, including lung damage and cancer. Rigid foam board insulation is water-resistant and has a high R-value and has multiple types from which to choose. Cellulose insulation is environmentally friendly and readily available, but it can be affected by moisture and settling over time.
Pay close attention to the R-value. This value means the insulation's resistance to heat flow, and when shopping for insulation, you want to find the type with the highest R-value. They generally range from about 11 to 38.
Check to see if the insulation has a lifetime performance guarantee. Insulation is not the type of product that should need replaced often. It will need replaced if it settled. Those with a lifetime performance guarantee are specifically designed not to settle.
Look for types of insulation that are non-combustible. Non-combustible insulation is important to have in your home for fire prevention. Some types of insulation are naturally fire retardant and will therefore not require chemical treatments.
