How to Remodel a Home Bar

If you enjoy entertaining, a home bar may be one of the best-used fixtures in your home. But if you've used that bar for a while, it may be looking a bit dated. It may be time to remodel. You may want to consider moving the bar to another place in the room, or it might be in the best spot right now. Regardless, your remodeled bar promises to be a gathering place that you will enjoy for many years to come.

Instructions

Evaluate your current home bar setup and determine what you would like to change. Document how much space you have, and compare it with the amount of space you will need to complete this project. If you want to change the location of the bar, you will need to ensure that you have access to water and waste lines. Also, make sure that you have access to electricity.

Create a plan for the new home bar. Decide on the kind of cabinetry and counters you want if you don't plan to refinish and reuse what you have. This is the time to consider a double-sided sink, a built-in microwave and a wine cooler. Because you probably will be tearing out your present bar and cabinets, this is an ideal time to assess your electrical needs, which may be greater if you plan bigger appliances and better lighting.

Purchase cabinetry, countertops, sink and appliances if you're totaling redoing the bar. If you're refinishing what you have, purchase the paint or wood stain and your supplies.

Hire a contractor if you don't feel comfortable doing a complete redo yourself. Even if you don't plan to hire a contractor for the whole job, you may need to hire a plumber and an electrician. If you're just updating what you have, the project is probably within your skill set.

Decorate the finished bar with your personal belongings. Add signs and pictures to the bar, as well as greenery. Use your creativity to make your home bar look the way you want it to.
