How to Block in a Doorway

An improperly placed doorway can ruin the flow of your home. You may simply place furniture in front of a door to block it, but this is only a temporary solution. Instead, remedy this problem by blocking in the unwanted doorway, to make it part of the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the hinges and pry the pins out of the hinges. Put the pry bar under the head of the pin and pry up, removing the pin and freeing the door. If the pin will not come up by prying, you may place a nail on the bottom of the pin and hammer it up to knock it out.

    • 2

Remove the hinges and any other hardware attached to the door frame and trim using the screwdriver. The screwdriver must match the screws, so if the screws have a slot head, for example, you would use a slot head screwdriver.

    • 3

Pry off the door trim with the pry bar. Put the pry bar under the trim and pry it up, pulling the trim away from the frame.

    • 4

Measure the interior width of the door frame with a tape measure and cut a piece of the lumber the same size with the chop saw.

    • 5

Place the lumber on the floor, in line with the door frame. Fasten the wood in place with six nails spaced equally across the board.

    • 6

Measure the interior height of the door -- from the board you have just installed to the top using a tape measure, and cut two pieces of the lumber to the same height with the chop saw. These pieces of lumber are for the studs.

    • 7

Put the first stud upright, one-quarter of the door frame's width away from the side of the frame on top of the piece of wood you installed on the ground. Secure the stud with nails. Hammer two nails into the side of the stud on the bottom end, on an angle and into the lumber on the floor. Hammer another two nails into the top of the stud, on an angle and into the top of the frame. Put the second stud a quarter of the door frame's width away from the other wall and attach it just as you did the first stud.

Measure the distance from the floor to the interior of the top of the door frame. Use this height and the interior width to give you the dimensions for your drywall. Cut two pieces of the drywall to these dimensions using the drywall knife.

    • 9

Set a piece of drywall in the doorway and fasten it to the studs with the drywall screws. Use the drill with a screwdriver bit. Put the screws 4 inches apart down each stud and across the bottom piece of lumber.
