How to Install J-Bolts in Cement for Mounting a Wall

Plastic anchor bolt holders offer the do-it-yourself builder an easy, quick method of securing J-bolts in position during a concrete pour. Bolt holders are cylindrically shaped and grasp the bolts' shanks and precisely position bolts at the proper distance from a slab's edge. The bolt holder attaches to a nailing flange, which quickly fastens to the top edge of concrete forming material. Additionally, if you're careful with anchor bolt holders, you can reuse them for several projects.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the underside of the anchor bolt's nailing flange on the top edge of the concrete forming material. Use the lip on the underside of the flange to adjust the J-bolt's distance from the slab's edge. Most anchor bolt holders feature a lip that designates the proper position for either 2-by-4 inch walls or 2-by-6 inch walls.

    • 2

Butt the flange's lip against the form board's edge to perpendicularly align the bolt holder with the edge of the slab. While holding the anchor bolt holder in place, place a duplex nail in one of the nailing flange's holes and drive the nail into the form board's top edge with a framing hammer. Drive nails into the remaining nail holes.

    • 3

Hold the J-bolt beneath the bolt holder with the bolt's curved side facing the ground. Press the bolt's threaded shank into the underside of the bolt holder's cylindrical gripping section. Twist the bolt clockwise to thread the bolt into the gripping section.

    • 4

Thread the bolt into the bolt holder until the bolt's shank protrudes from the top of the bolt holder's gripping section. Adjust the bolt's height to the proper position. If your wall has both a sill plate and bottom plate, raise the bolt to account for the extra height.
