How to Schedule Subcontractors

As a contractor or home builder, you and your crew will likely not complete each and every job yourselves. With larger and more complex projects, you are likely to hire subcontractors. These are specialized workers who are either self-employed or hired from another company who come out to your job site to complete work that you and your crew don't have the time, resources or expertise to complete yourselves. However, you don't want all your subcontractors coming at one time, so you need to come up with an organized schedule.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of all the subcontractors that you have hired for the project. Include the estimated time each gave for completing their portion of the job, such as two weeks.

    • 2

Arrange the subcontractors in order of completion of the overall job. Some work might need to be completed before others can begin their projects. For example, before plumbing fixtures are installed, the actual pipelines, and possibly the electrical work, need to be completed.

    • 3

Use a calendar to write out what dates each subcontractor can come out to the job site. Keep in mind which subcontractors need to come out before others, as well as how long the subcontractors are likely to take to complete their portions of the job.

    • 4

Give yourself some buffer room with the schedule. If a subcontractor claims a project will be done in two weeks, for example, add a few days or a week before you schedule the next subcontractor to visit the job site.

    • 5

Change the schedule as necessary. Even though you give yourself buffer room, something might still happen to delay construction. Give your subcontractors as much notice as possible if their portion of the project is being delayed.
