How to Attach a Pipe to I-beam

When pipes are installed in commercial and industrial buildings, the weight of the pipe or conduit is held by the building's iron work. Steel i-beams create the building's skeleton, and are the best supports for gas, electric, and liquid plumbing and mechanical pipes. Pipes are connected to the iron I-beams with an assortment of pipe hangers and mechanical clamps.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal conduit, or pipes
  • Mechanical pipe hangers / clamps
  • Assorted hand tools, including screwdrivers and adjustable pliers
  • Ladder or person lift to reach the steel I-beams

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the weight of the pipe which to connect to the I-beam. Plastic PVC pipe is connected with a much lighter weight connector than a heavy iron gas or water line. Before the pipe can be connected, the correct pipe connector must be chosen based on the weight of the pipe.

    • 2

Check if there are any building codes that cover the piping installation, and the minimum distance between fasteners. For a safe installation, the pipe is held securely, and in a new construction setting, these parameters are likely determined by building codes.

    • 3

Fasten the connectors to the steel I-beam. Check that each fastener is firmly anchored to the I-beam.

    • 4

Attach the second part of the hanger to the pipe, and then connect the two parts of the fastener together. Most pipe hangers are designed in two parts to simplify the process.
