How to Install Forms to Pour Concrete Walls

One use of a poured concrete wall is in the foundation of a home. Concrete is used because it won't rot when exposed to the moisture in the ground, it's fairly economical and easy to use and it's strong enough to support the weight of your house. The traditional method of building concrete forms uses wood for the forms, but newer methods can involve using foam blocks. These blocks are stacked like bricks when the form is being assembled and remain in place after the concrete has been poured to act as insulation.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk snap line
  • Foam blocks
  • Silicone caulk
  • Fiber-reinforced tape
  • 2-by-4 boards
  • Hammer
  • Nails

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the outer edge of the wall on the concrete footing by snapping a chalk line.

    • 2

Place the first course of foam blocks onto the footings, starting in the corners and working toward the middle of the walls. Line the outside edge of the blocks with the chalk line, and attach the blocks to the footings with silicone caulk, applying the caulk as you lay the blocks.

    • 3

Lay the second course of blocks for the form. Begin in the corners and stagger the blocks so the joints between them are staggered from the joints in the first-row blocks. This strengthens the form.

    • 4

Cover the horizontal joints in the corner blocks with fiber-reinforced tape. Begin applying the tape about 4 feet down from the corner and wrap it around the corner until it's about 4 feet down on the next wall. The tape provides added strength for the forms after the concrete is poured.

    • 5

Construct wooden braces against the outer edge of the form in the corners. Not all systems require wooden bracing, and the bracing method can vary by manufacturer, so read the installation instructions for the system that you're using for the proper method to install the bracing.

    • 6

Add layers of foam blocks to the form until it's at the desired height, using the same process you used to install the first two courses. Lay rebar horizontally inside the walls, following local building codes. The rebar strengthens the concrete.

    • 7

Install rebar vertically inside the form after you have finished installing the form. Again, follow local building codes regarding rebar installation.

    • 8

Construct wooden bracing along the sides of the form to support it as the concrete is being poured. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the installation of the bracing as it can vary.
