Sauna Wood Types

A sauna provides relaxation and a chance for the body to purify itself. Sauna walls and benches are traditionally made of wood. The wood of a sauna provides a soulful, quiet and pleasing atmosphere. Soft woods work best, since they don't get as hot as hardwoods and they absorb the humidity in the air. The best woods have aesthetic properties that accentuate the ambiance and sensations of resting in a sauna.
  1. Cedar

    • Cedar is among the most beautiful of all woods. It is an ideal sauna wood. It has beautiful, small knots. It stays comfortable to touch in the heat. It has natural oils in it that prevent the growth of microorganisms, and this can extend its life in the humid air of a sauna. It is a wood that does not easily buckle or bend. Perhaps the most pleasing quality of cedar is its beautiful aroma. It is relaxing and invigorating all at once -- an extremely clean smell.

    Nordic White Spruce

    • Nordic white spruce is a light-colored wood, and is the most common wood for sauna walls. It doesn't stain easily and doesn't absorb bad smells. Its light tone creates a brighter, more luminous atmosphere in the dim light of a sauna, with less of the "dark corners" effect that is so common. The grain is very fine, with tiny knots that add a beautiful texture. Its surface is smooth to touch and it holds its light color as it ages. It is an ideal wood for Finnish-type saunas, or to form walls in any sauna.

    Abachi

    • Abachi is an excellent wood for benches. It is a light-colored exotic African wood. It stays comfortable to touch in the high temperatures of the sauna. It does not splinter and is free of knots. It can be teamed perfectly with Nordic white spruce.

    Pine

    • Pine is a very soft golden wood which will darken over time. As the years pass, its color will become more and more luxurious. It is great for walls and ceilings.
