How to Install a Fiber Wood Floor

Also known as laminate flooring, fiber wood flooring planks have wood composite, or fiber wood, cores instead of being crafted from solid wood like standard hardwood flooring. These floors also have a plasticlike outer coating that provides protection from spills and scuffs more effectively than traditional uncoated hardwood. While the installation process for hardwood floors generally requires nailing or gluing the planks to the subfloor, fiber wood floors commonly install as “floating” floors, which do not require attachment to the subfloor surface.

  • Chalk
  • Leveling compound

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a level at one corner of the subfloor over which you intend to install the fiber wood flooring. Look at the edge of the level that touches the floor to find any dips where the floor doesn’t fully touch the level, and mark these spots with chalk. Continue moving the level around the floor surface until you check the entire floor for low spots.

    • 2

Spread leveling compound into the marked low spots with a plastic applicator. Let the compound sit for the amount of time the compound manufacturer recommends on the packaging, and then check the spots with the level again. Sand down until level any spots that sit slightly above the floor.

    • 3

Wet a mop, and wring out the excess water. Go over the entire surface of the subfloor with the mop to lift up any dust and scrub up any dirt stuck to the surface. Let the floor dry for a few hours until all the water has evaporated.

    • 4

Lay the first fiber wood plank in one corner of the room along one wall. Put one of the flooring spacers included with the fiber wood flooring planks down where the end of the plank touches the adjacent wall and another spacer down along the edge of the plank where it meets the wall with which it is lined up. Push the plank up and over to touch the spacers fully.

    • 5

Place the next plank down on the floor end-to-end with the first plank to create a straight row. Use flooring spacers where the plank meets the wall. Continue laying planks across the flooring in this manner until you create one full row, and cut down the last plank of that row with a circular saw, if necessary.

    • 6

Trim 6 to 8 inches off the first plank for the next row. Slide the tongue of that trimmed plank into the track on the first plank of the first row, hold a flooring spacer against the wall, and slide the plank down until it sits against the flooring spacer. Lay full planks out from the trimmed plank until you reach the end of the second row, and cut a plank down to fit at the end of the row, if necessary.

    • 7

Cut the first plank for the next row down by approximately 12 to 16 inches, but leave the plank length at least 8 inches, even if that requires trimming a little less off the plank. Put the plank down at the start of the third row, connecting it to the first plank of the second row and using a flooring spacer against the wall. Lay the rest of the row’s planks, trimming down the final plank with the circular saw if necessary.

    • 8

Use this three-row pattern across the floor, which staggers the flooring seams and creates a stronger wood fiber floor. If full planks have too much width for the final row, use the circular saw to trim the width and make them fit the space. Once trimmed, the planks should connect to the last full row and have room for floor spacers between the other edge and the wall.
