Can Foam Underlayment Be Installed Under Hardwood?

Not only can foam be placed under hardwood, it should be placed under hardwood. Modern foam pads prevent the floor from squeaking and absorb most of the noise from walking on the hardwood pieces. Best of all, there are even all-in-one pads that also act as a moisture barrier.
  1. Basic Foam

    • Basic foam underlayment for hardwood is comprised of a material called polyethylene foam. The bottom of the foam is adhesive. This means that it sticks directly to a clean subfloor. The adhesive is stuck to a waterproof barrier. Waterproof barriers are required under hardwood floors anyway, because the barriers prevent moisture from seeping through the subfloor and warping the wood. Finally, the top is a thin (2-to-3-inch) foam that easily compresses.

    Flooring Without Foam

    • While hardwood floors can be nailed down directly to a wood substrate floor, there are some disadvantages. The primary disadvantage is moisture damage. Should there be any flooding under the floor, the hardwood will warp and require replacing. Additionally, over time, the boards can come loose and cause squeaking when the floor is walked on.

    How to Install

    • Before installing a foam underlayment, it is important to be aware of the work involved. This job is best done when the floor is initially installed; otherwise, you’ll have to pull up the entire flooring. Start off by sweeping the floor to remove any dirt. Next, lay the foam underlayment on one side of the room and start adhering it to that floor surface. Slowly unroll the foam underlayment over the floor, peeling away the adhesive cover as you go.

    Alternatives

    • For those who would rather avoid the work of installing foam, there are alternative underlayments. Everything from plywood to backerboard and Sheetrock can all be used as underlayments for hardwood. These underlayments must be independently stapled or nailed down to the subfloor before continuing.
