Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Mantel
1. Clean the mantel thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove any dust, dirt, or debris.
2. Allow the mantel to dry completely.
3. Sand the mantel with 180-grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface and remove any old finish.
4. Wipe off the mantel with a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust.
5. Sand the mantel with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots.
6. Wipe off the mantel with a tack cloth to remove any remaining sanding dust.
Step 2: Apply the Stain
1. Open the can of stain and stir thoroughly with a stir stick.
2. Dip the paintbrush into the stain and apply it to the mantel in the direction of the grain.
3. Allow the stain to sit on the mantel for the amount of time specified on the stain can.
4. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean rag.
5. Allow the stain to dry completely.
6. Apply a second coat of stain if desired for a darker finish.
Step 3: Apply the Polyurethane
1. Open the can of polyurethane and stir thoroughly with a stir stick.
2. Dip the paintbrush into the polyurethane and apply it to the mantel in the direction of the grain.
3. Allow the polyurethane to dry completely.
4. Apply a second coat of polyurethane for added protection.
Tips
* If the mantel is very detailed or has a lot of carved areas, you may want to use a foam brush to apply the stain and polyurethane to ensure that the stain gets into all the nooks and crannies.
* To achieve a more even finish, you can apply the stain and polyurethane with a spray can.
* Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area.
* Wear disposable gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from the chemicals in the stain and polyurethane.
