How to Make a Wood Stove Hearth With Tile

Materials

* Fire-resistant backer board

* Cement board

* Thinset mortar

* Tiles

* Grout

* Sealant

Tools

* Tape measure

* Level

* Utility knife

* Notched trowel

* Grout float

* Sponge

* Caulk gun

Instructions

1. Prepare the subfloor. The subfloor must be level and smooth. If it is not, you will need to level it using a self-leveling compound.

2. Install the fire-resistant backer board. Cut the backer board to size and install it over the subfloor. Use screws or nails to secure the backer board in place.

3. Install the cement board. Cut the cement board to size and install it over the backer board. Use thinset mortar to adhere the cement board to the backer board.

4. Install the tiles. Cut the tiles to size and install them over the cement board. Use thinset mortar to adhere the tiles to the cement board.

5. Grout the tiles. Once the tiles are installed, grout them using a grout float. Be sure to fill all of the joints between the tiles.

6. Seal the tiles. Once the grout is dry, seal the tiles using a sealant. This will help to protect the tiles from stains and moisture.

Tips

* When installing the tiles, be sure to leave a 1/4-inch gap between the tiles. This gap will allow for expansion and contraction of the tiles.

* When grouting the tiles, be sure to use a color that will complement the tiles.

* When sealing the tiles, be sure to use a sealant that is specifically designed for use on tiles.
