How to Burn Coal in a Fireplace

Materials Needed:

- Coal

- Firewood

- Fire starter cubes or kindling

- Matches or lighter

- Metal grate

- Fireproof gloves

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fireplace:

- Ensure the fireplace is clean and free of any debris or ashes.

- Place a metal grate at the bottom of the fireplace to elevate the coal and allow for air circulation.

2. Build a Fire:

- Start by placing a few pieces of firewood crisscrossed in the center of the grate.

- Add some fire starter cubes or kindling on top of the firewood.

3. Add Coal:

- Once the firewood is burning steadily, add a layer of coal on top of the fire. Do not overload the fireplace with coal. Start with a thin layer.

- Use a poker to gently distribute the coal and create an even layer.

4. Light the Fire:

- Using a match or lighter, ignite the fire starter cubes or kindling.

- Allow the fire to catch hold and start burning the firewood and coal.

5. Maintain the Fire:

- As the fire burns, add more coal as needed to maintain the desired heat level.

- Use the poker to occasionally stir the coal to ensure even burning and prevent the formation of clinkers (fused coal).

6. Safety Precautions:

- Always wear fireproof gloves and safety glasses when handling coal or tending the fire.

- Never leave the fireplace unattended while burning coal.

- Keep children and pets away from the fireplace.

- Open a window or door slightly to allow for proper ventilation and prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide.

Note:

- Coal can produce high levels of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, so it's essential to ensure proper ventilation when burning coal in a fireplace.

- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines for your specific fireplace and coal type.
