Design Ideas for a Brick Wall Fireplace

For older fireplaces, a brick surround and sometimes even a partial wall of brick are usually standard. However, brick is not suited to the taste of every homeowner. If your brick fireplace is leaving you cold, take time to think before hiring any contractors or performing any major renovations. There are several ways to redo that fireplace façade that are much less of an investment in both time and money.
  1. Concrete Overlay

    • If traditional brick is not your style and you are seeking something more modern, concrete may be just what you are looking for. Do not shy away from the idea just because gray is not your preferred color; today's concretes can be pigmented during mixing or stained after drying to almost any shade. A concrete overlay is one of the simplest makeovers you can choose for your fireplace surround, since it requires little preparation. You will need, however, a steady hand and a good dose of patience. Concrete must be finished well to have the desired affect. Rushing the job will result in a sloppy appearance.

    Painting

    • Many people do not mind the texture of brick, but simply have a distaste for the chosen color. A dark brick can make a small room seem claustrophobic, while some very light shades of brick may look dated. Painting over the brick can take care of this problem. Whitewash is perhaps the most popular choice, but with so many paint colors available, you are limited only by your imagination. Choose good-quality, heat-resistant primers and paint that will not blister from the radiant heat of a good blaze.

    Adding Stone

    • One of the frequent objections to brick is that is has an industrial look. Brick is familiar because of its use on the façade of many public buildings, and it can give off a cold feeling. If you are seeking a more natural material for the surround of your fireplace, consider using stone. Many types of stones are available in a spectrum of colors from pristine white to darkest black. Stone is quite compatible with brick and can be applied directly over the surface of your fireplace with a layer of mortar.
