How to Install a Galvanized Steel Corrugated Roof Panel

Corrugated roof panels provide a quick and relatively inexpensive method of finishing a roof surface. This type of material is suitable for a variety of building structures, such as sheds, playhouses, shops and pet or livestock shelters. Galvanized steel resists weathering and rusting, while the slick surface and grooves help prevent water and snow accumulation. Consult your local building department prior to building a new roof or replacing and old one. Some neighborhoods and municipalities require building permits for this type of construction project.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the filler strips to your roof by installing them horizontally with the ridgeline. Filler strips are thin lengths of wood with ridges that match the pattern of your corrugated metal sheeting. These bumpy strips help support the ridges in the panels and minimize the likelihood of birds, mice and bug infestations between the metal sheeting and the underlying wood. Using roofing nails, attach the filler strips every 2 feet between the eaves and the ridgeline.

    • 2

Place the first sheet of corrugated metal in place, starting at the bottom corner of your roof. Allow a slight overlap along the side and bottom of the roof surface. Nail the galvanized steel panel in place by driving steel roofing nails into each ridge that goes over a filler strip. Hammer the nails until the heads rest against the metal, holding the corrugated panel firmly against the supporting filler strip.

    • 3

Place a second panel beside the first panel, overlapping the outside ridges on the end. Nail this panel in place, placing the nails along the overlapping edges and along the rest of the filler strips. Attach the remaining panels to the roof in the same manner. Use sheet metal shears to cut off any excess metal sheeting that extends beyond the peak of the roof or off the outside edge of the roof. Repeat the application on the opposite side of your roof.

Attach the corrugated ridge cap over the center section of your roof, where the upper edges of the metal panels meet.
