How to Paint a Front Door With Liquid Vinyl

Liquid vinyl is an exterior coating option that's popular for its durability. This compound, which contains a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, is available in spray-on or brush-on varieties. While the primary use for this product is coating home siding, it can be used on any exterior surface, including the front door. Regardless of whether your door is wood, metal or another synthetic material, you can apply this vinyl coating and protectant to the surface, making it more resilient and likely extending its life.

Instructions

  1. Spray-on Application

    • 1

Remove the door from the hinges. Use a screwdriver to remove the door, placing the screws in a safe place where you can find them after painting.

    • 2

Lay the door on a flat, covered surface. Because you shouldn't move the door after painting until it is dry, you should select a space with a roof over it, such as a covered porch or garage. Ensure also that the space is properly ventilated as there is an odor associated with liquid vinyl. Lay a drop cloth to protect the surface upon which you are painting.

    • 3

Clean the door. Spray on a multipurpose cleaner and wipe down the door with a paper towel. Allow the door to dry completely before continuing.

    • 4

Spray an even coat of liquid vinyl on the door, going with the grain. Avoid spraying this compound on too thick, as doing so can result in drip marks.

    • 5

Allow the paint to dry. While specific drying times vary from brand to brand, generally this compound takes 12 hours to dry.

    • 6

Apply a second coat. Spray on this coat in the same manner, and with the same care, as you applied the first.

    • 7

Rehang your door. After allowing 24 hours for the painted door to completely dry and cure, hang it back on the hinges using your reserved screws.

    Brush-on Application

    • 8

Clean the door surface. Spray a multipurpose cleaner on the door and wipe away any dirt with a paper towel.

    • 9

Open the door. While you can remove the door from the hinges, when brushing on this paint you can leave it hinged as well. If you choose to paint it while it's hanging, you will need to leave the door open throughout the process. Use a door stop or other block to hold the door open and prevent accidental closing.

    • 10

Tape around the door. After opening the door, run masking tape around the door frame, covering any surface on which you do not wish to get paint.

    • 11

Brush on one coat of liquid vinyl, going with the grain. Avoid applying the paint too thick, as doing so will likely leave you with a less-uniform finish.

    • 12

Allow the coat to dry. Allow approximately 12 hours for this drying to finish.

    • 13

Apply a second coat. Brush this coat on in the same way you applied the first, taking care to cover any spots that you may have missed on the first application.

    • 14

Run a razor blade around the surrounding tape to loosen it. Remove the tape while the liquid vinyl is still tacky.
