How to Attach Bricks to the Foundation of a House

Make the exterior foundation of your home more visually appealing by covering it with bricks. Foundations are typically made of concrete and do little to enhance the exterior. Brick will give your home a traditional or a Craftsman look. Instead of using full-sized bricks, which are bulky and difficult to work with, use brick veneers, which are lighter and easier to install.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the foundation of the home to prepare it for brick installation. Use a power washer to remove any dirt and debris from the surface of the foundation.

    • 2

Apply mortar to the surface of the foundation with a notched trowel. Run the notched edged through the wet mortar in an upward fashion, creating a scratched surface for the brick veneer to adhere to.

    • 3

Start at the bottom center of the wall. Apply a thin layer of mortar to the back of a brick veneer. Place the veneer on the wall and hold it in place to create a bond between the veneer and the wall.

    • 4

Apply bricks to the wall on either side of the first brick, using the same process described in Step 3. Place the bricks no more than 1/2 inch apart.

    • 5

Measure areas where full bricks won't fit; the edges of the foundation, for example. Cut the bricks to equal the measurements with a wet tile cutter. Attach the cut bricks to the foundation using the same process as described in Step 3.

    • 6

Work in an upward fashion. Once you complete one row of bricks, apply another row of bricks until the entire foundation is covered with bricks.

    • 7

Allow the bricks to set for 48 hours.

    • 8

Apply grout to the surface of the bricks with a trowel. Concentrate on filling in the spaces between the bricks.

    • 9

Wet a large sponge and wring excess water from it. Wipe down the bricks while the mortar is still wet to remove mortar from the surface of the bricks. Rinse the sponge and wring it out, as needed, and completely wipe down the entire brick foundation.
