How to Make Your Own Latex Exterior Wall Texture Coating

Exterior wall texture gives your walls protection from the elements and adds a touch of interest to an otherwise boringly smooth surface. While pre-made textured paint can be expensive, you can make your own paint textures with exterior latex paint and a texturing material. Sand is a good textured material to use since it adheres well and won’t break down in water. Textured paints work best on surfaces that aren’t already textured.

Instructions

    • 1

Select which kind of sand you want to use to create your textured paint. Fine sand will give your walls slight texture, while coarse sand will give your walls more texture.

    • 2

Fill the bucket 2/3 full of the exterior latex paint.

Add 1 cup of sand at a time to the paint. Use the paint mixer to mix it into the paint. Add more sand and keep mixing the paint until you get the desired consistency. The final consistency of the textured paint should be wet enough to brush onto the walls of your home with a roller.
