How to Brick a Porch

Full-sized brick or brick veneer can be used to transform a utilitarian concrete porch into a porch that is more attractive and homey. Unfortunately, you cannot add brick to a porch made of wood. If you would like a brick porch and you have a wooden porch, you will need to tear out your old porch and start from scratch. Brick can only be added to a concrete structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the concrete base with a stiff brush and water. Remove all dirt and grit.

    • 2

Spread a layer of thin set in the area where you plan to lay the first course of bricks. Use a notched trowel. With the notched side of the trowel, scrape grooves into the thin set.

    • 3

Lay down the first course of bricks on the thin set. Press the bricks firmly into the concrete. Wiggle them a little to ensure that the thin set is absorbed into the pores on the back of the brick. Insert plastic spacers between the bricks to ensure the bricks have been evenly distributed.

    • 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to lay the next course of bricks. Continue this process over the entire porch.

    • 5

Create a border of brick veneer tiles around the porch by spreading thin set over the sides of the porch and placing brick veneer tiles over the thin set. Insert plastic spacers between bricks to keep the brick veneer tiles evenly distributed. Wait for the thin set to cure, as per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 6

      Remove the plastic spacers.

    • 7

Grout the spaces between the joints with wet mortar. Use a tuck point trowel to put the mortar in the narrow spaces between the bricks.

    • 8

Scrape extra mortar off the bricks.

    • 9

Wait one week. Scrub the porch with a stiff brush to remove extra mortar crumbles and mortar dust.
