How to Close Heat Ducts

If you have central heating in your home, you may wish to temporarily close off the central heating from a room or section of your home. You can then save on energy bills by heating only the rooms that you use the most. You can close the heating ducts using the vents and registers in the individual rooms or use the baffles in your ductwork to close off heat closer to the heater to save even more energy.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the heat ducts from the room or rooms you wish to close off back to the heater. Place your ear against the vent inside the room and have an assistant tap on different ducts, if necessary, until you find the duct connected to the room by listening for the loudest tap.

    • 2

Inspect the length of the duct leading to the room for a baffle lever. This is a metal lever located at the bottom of the pipe that can rotate 45 degrees to close or open the pipe.

    • 3

Rotate the baffle lever until it is perpendicular to the pipe. This will close the baffle and block the air from flowing into the pipe.

    • 4

Return to the room and close the output vents by sliding the lever up or down. If there is no baffle available, this will also keep the room from being heated unnecessarily.
