Measure the width of the top side of the duct with a tape measure.
Cut a piece of the duct board with the knife to match the size of the top of the duct.
Place the duct board on top of the duct and hold it in place temporarily with a few pieces of tape.
Measure the side of the duct from the top face of the insulation board to the bottom edge of the duct.
If the board you are using is two inches thick, the measurement should be the side of the duct plus two inches.
Peel the liner from the insulation pins and attach pins to the sides of the duct. The pins should be no more than three inches from the edges of the duct and no more than 12 inches from each other.
If the duct is 15 inches tall, there will be a row of pins three inches from the top and another row of pins three inches from the bottom of the duct. These pins should be every 12 inches down each row. If the duct is 19 inches tall, you will need to add a center row of pins.
Press the duct board onto the pins, until it touches the duct.
Place a washer over each pin to hold the duct board in place. Do not compress the duct board.
Bend the pins flat to the outer face of the duct board using the needle nose pliers.
Measure across the bottom of the duct, including the two thicknesses of insulation board, using the tape measure. If you are using two-inch-thick thick board, your measurement should be the width of the duct plus four inches".
Cut the insulation to the right size using the knife.
Install insulation pins, following the same pattern used for the sides of the duct.
Press duct board onto pins.
Install washers onto pins to hold duct board in place.
Cover all holes in the facing material with a compatible tape.
Apply tape over all washers.
Cover all raw fiberglass edges with tape. This will hold the board on the top of the duct permanently by connecting the top piece to the two side pieces.
