How to Install a Door at the Top of Stairs

Tools and materials:

- Tape measure

- Pencil

- Level

- Drill

- Screwdriver

- Hammer

- Nails

- Wood screws

- Door

- Door jamb

- Door hinges

- Casing

Instructions:

1. Measure the opening for the door. The door should be about 1.5 inches taller and 2 inches wider than the opening.

2. Cut the door and door jamb to size.

3. Install the door jamb. Use a level to make sure the jamb is plumb. Nail the jamb in place.

4. Install the door hinges. Use a drill to make holes for the hinge screws. Screw the hinges in place.

5. Hang the door. Lift the door up and put it in place. Make sure the door is level.

6. Close the door and make sure it latches properly.

7. Install the casing. Use a nail gun to nail the casing in place.

Tips:

- Make sure the door is properly seated in the jamb before you nail the jamb in place.

- Use a shim to level the door if necessary.

- Be careful not to overtighten the hinge screws.

- Use wood putty to fill any nail holes.

- Paint or stain the door and jamb to match the rest of your trim.
