How to Mount Door Pivot Hinge

Save yourself money by mounting pivot hinges to doors in your home without paying a professional to do it. Pivoting door hinges are commonly used on cabinets, closets and shower doors. Pivoting door hinges are less complex than the hinges found on standard doors within your house. The simpleness of a pivot hinge makes the installation process quick and the materials less expensive than a standard hinge. The installation process does not require any special knowledge or abilities and uses common household tools.

  Examine the doorway to determine the direction you want the door to open, and on which side you want the door hinged. The pivot hinge extends out from the door frame, where it connects to the door, and opens from that direction.

  Position the “acceptor” in the top corner of the door frame so the “vertical plate” lies flat against the vertical part of the door frame, and the “pivot plate” lies against the top of the door frame so that the “pivot hole” extends out from the frame. The acceptor is a metal piece made up of two flat plates. The larger plate is the “vertical plate,” and the other plate is the “pivot plate.” These are all part of the pivot hinge mounting kit.

  Position the second “acceptor” in the bottom corner of the door frame so that the “vertical plate” lies flat against the vertical part of the door frame. Position the “pivot plate” so it lies one-fourth inch from the bottom of the floor. Extend the “pivot hole" out from the frame in the same direction as the top “acceptor.”

  Insert the mounting screws (from the mounting kit) through the mounting holes of the “acceptor." Tighten the screws into the door frame with a screwdriver. Both “acceptors” should be aligned flush with the door frame's front, facing in the same direction. This ensures proper spacing for the door.
