Different Approaches for a Basement Ceiling

Creating a living space in your basement gives you more room in the home for your family to enjoy. The basement can become a family room, home office, crafts room or a play space for the kids. The ceiling you choose for your basement determines whether your room has a homey comfortable feeling or the cold stark look of a basement. While you may not have a great deal of choice about the materials you use, the way you decorate your ceiling can help to create the atmosphere you want for your basement room.
  1. Drywall

    • Drywall is more difficult to install than a dropped or suspended ceiling in your basement because of the weight of the material. You can use the drywall to box in ductwork and electrical work while incorporating it into the design of your ceiling. Paint the drywall ceiling with contrasting colors to create the illusion of height in the room. For example, use a lighter color on the main portion of the ceiling, and paint the boxed-in ductwork a darker shade or a natural wood grain. The contrasting colors will give the center area of the room the illusion of a taller ceiling.

    Laminate Planks

    • The laminate planks traditionally used for flooring can create the look of wood on your basement ceiling. Laminate planks come in a variety of colors and styles to suit the decor of your basement room. Use white planks to create an open and airy look in your basement room. Natural wood grain planks can give your basement room a log cabin or rustic design, which is a comfortable and homey feeling for a family room.

    Combination

    • Take advantage of both types of materials by using a suspended ceiling in areas where you need access to ductwork and wiring, and use drywall for the rest of the ceiling, which allows you to take advantage of the decorating ease with drywall while still allowing you access to your ductwork and wiring. You can use reflective panels for your suspended ceiling to give the room a funky modern look in those areas.
