How to Install a Ceiling Fan on Very High Ceilings

A ceiling fan doesn't do much good if it's so high on the ceiling that you can't feel the air movement. If you have a very high ceiling (14 feet or more), and you want to install a ceiling fan, it's a good idea to get one with an extender rod on it. This is a hollow narrow tube that hangs off the electrical box, dropping the level of the fan so it's several feet down from the ceiling. A good rule thumb is to get one that will put the blades 2 to 3 feet over your head.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the electricity to the existing ceiling fixture at the circuit box. Remove the existing light fixture by taking out the mounting screws holding it there. Disconnect the wires between the fixture and the ceiling electrical box. Leave the exposed wires hanging out of the box.

    • 2

Locate the mounting bracket for your fan, which will be a round metal plate. Attach it to the ceiling electrical box by lining up the screw holes of the plate with the screw holes of the electrical box and inserting the provided screws. Pull the exposed wire ends down through the opening of the mounting bracket.

    • 3

Wrap the bare grounding wire from the electrical box onto the green grounding screw on the mounting bracket. Tighten the screw.

    • 4

Put the fan together on the floor (except the blades), threading the electrical wires of the fan out through the extender rod at the top of the housing. There will be a canopy at the top of the rod, facing up, to go against the ceiling.

    • 5

Carry the fan up the ladder. Position the top of the extender rod near the ceiling electrical box. Connect the wires from the fan unit to those of the box, black to black and white to white. Make the connections by twisting a wire cap over the two wires while holding them side by side.

    • 6

Lift the fan unit up to set the canopy onto the mounting bracket. Connect it using the provided screws.

    • 7

Install the fan blades. Restore the power. Test the fan at the wall switch.
