Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the ceiling. Calculate how many boards you will need to cover the ceiling. Subtract 1/2 an inch from the ceiling measurement to calculate for a 1/4-inch perimeter around the entire ceiling. This will account for any expansion in the wood due to temperature changes.

    • 2

Cut the bead board planks to the necessary length. Measure the width of each board to calculate how many rows of board you will need. If necessary, cut one of the boards so that they will space evenly on the ceiling.

    • 3

Locate the ceiling joists with a stud finder. Mark the placement of the joists with a chalk line.

    • 4

Nail the planks up against the ceiling starting from one corner. Leave a 1/4-inch gap between both edges of the ceiling for expansion. Nail the bead board plank to every ceiling joist along the ceiling.

    • 5

Fit each following plank into the groove of the previously installed plank. Cover the entire ceiling in this manner, making sure to leave 1/4-inch gaps along all wall edges.

    • 6

Cut out openings for all light fixtures and other protrusions with a jigsaw. Outline the opening with a pencil, then cut the shape out with the jigsaw. Nail the board in place once the opening is cut.

    • 7

Nail the trim up between the ceiling and the walls. Cut the trim pieces where they meet along the corners with a miter saw. Use a 45-degree angle to make the corner cuts so that they fit smoothly together.
