How to Hook Up a Punching Bag to a Ceiling

A punching bag is a common piece of boxing equipment used everywhere from gyms to home workout areas. Not only does boxing tone and strengthen your back, arms and shoulders, it also improves your overall speed and agility. Working out with a punching bag is easiest when the bag hangs from the ceiling; however, it needs to be installed correctly, so it will not damage the ceiling or structure of the house. Take extra care when installing the bag to prevent damaging the walls and ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick an area with enough room for the bag to swing without knocking into walls or furniture.

    • 2

Locate the nearest joist to that area with a stud finder. Mark the center of the stud with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill a hole into the ceiling joist. Start with a small bit and working up to the size of the eye bolt.

    • 4

Insert the eye bolt into the hole. Have a partner hold it steady while you slide a washer over the bolt and add a nut. Tighten the nut with a wrench while your partner holds a screwdriver in the eye bolt to keep it from turning.

    • 5

Attach the chains included with the bag onto the attachment points along the top of the bag. The attachment points are usually four metal D-rings, and they attach to the chains with S-hooks.

Have your partner help lift the bag to attach the chain to the eye bolt. It may be easier to use a table or ladder to gradually lift the bag higher and higher until the chain reaches.
