Materials Needed:
- Toilet bowl wax ring (with or without a plastic funnel)
- Toilet flange bolts
- Adjustable wrench
- Plumber's putty (optional)
- Rag or paper towels
- Utility knife
Instructions:
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply:
Locate the water supply valve behind or near the toilet. Turn the valve clockwise to shut off the water supply to the toilet. Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl.
Step 2: Remove the Old Toilet:
- Disconnect the water supply line by loosening the nuts connecting the line to the toilet's fill valve.
- Disconnect the toilet flange bolts by turning the nuts counterclockwise using the adjustable wrench. (If nuts are corroded, you may need a utility knife to cut through them.)
- Carefully lift the toilet up and away from the flange, breaking the seal between the toilet and the floor.
- Discard the old wax ring and clean the toilet flange and the floor around it.
Step 3: Install the New Wax Ring:
- Place the new wax ring on the toilet flange, ensuring it sits evenly and flat against the flange surface.
- If using a wax ring with a plastic funnel, carefully remove the plastic funnel after positioning the wax ring.
Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty (Optional):
- If the toilet flange has any cracks or uneven surfaces, you may apply a thin layer of plumber's putty around the base of the toilet before setting it in place. This helps create a better seal and prevents leaks.
Step 5: Install the Toilet:
- Carefully lower the toilet onto the wax ring, ensuring it aligns properly with the toilet flange bolts and the drainpipe.
- Press down firmly to create a seal between the toilet and the wax ring.
- Hand-tighten the toilet flange bolts, alternating between bolts to ensure even pressure.
Step 6: Secure the Toilet:
- Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the flange bolts further, alternating between bolts until they are snug but not over-tightened.
- Avoid over-tightening the bolts as it can crack the toilet bowl.
Step 7: Reconnect the Water Supply:
- Reconnect the water supply line to the toilet's fill valve and tighten the nuts.
- Turn the water supply valve counterclockwise to turn on the water supply.
- Check for leaks around the base of the toilet, flange bolts, and water supply connection.
Step 8: Flush and Test:
- Flush the toilet and ensure it fills and empties properly.
- Check for leaks again, especially around the base of the toilet and the flange bolts.
Step 9: Clean Up:
- Use a rag or paper towels to clean up any excess wax or water from the floor around the toilet.
Step 10: Let the Seal Set:
- Allow the wax ring to set for several hours before using the toilet to ensure a proper seal.
By following these steps, you can effectively seal a porcelain toilet and prevent potential leaks, stains, and odors. Remember, if you encounter any difficulties or have concerns about the plumbing, it's best to consult with a professional plumber for assistance.
