Acrylic tubs have built-in flange that acts as a dam to keep the water in the tub.
- Install the tub drain according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Measure the tub.
- Once the drain is placed in the tub you need to measure the exterior lip of the tub. You need to measure both width and length. It is best to measure the tub and jot the measurements down.
Example: 60x32 (60inches wide x 32 inches long)
3. Cut the foam board.
- Go to your local home improvement store and purchase a minimum of 2 foam board insulation panels _(1-inch thickness is recommended)_
- Using the tub measurements, cut out two pieces of foam board the same size as the exterior dimensions of the tub. If the tub has beveled edges, create the proper angles on the foam boards.
4. Attach the foam board to the studs.
- Apply construction adhesive to the back of the foam board pieces and press them firmly against the wall studs.
- You can use a screwdriver or other suitable tool to help the foam board pieces align with the wall studs.
5. Install blocking on the corners of the tub.
- This is an important step. To prevent the tub from shifting or buckling in one area, extra support must be added to the corners of the tub. Cut small pieces of dimensional lumber to fit between the studs and along both ends of the tub. Glue and screw to wood to the studs.
- Ensure that the blocking is secure and level before proceeding.
6. Set the tub in place.
- Lift the tub into position, making sure it's centered above the drain.
- Gently set the tub down onto the foam board, applying pressure to ensure the tub is stable and secure.
7. Secure the tub.
- Use plumber's caulk to seal any gaps between the tub flange and the wall. Use a screwdriver or your gloved finger to apply the caulk.
- Let the caulk dry completely before moving on.
8. Add the tile or wallboard and faucet handles.
- Continue with your bathroom remodeling project by installing tile or wallboard around the tub.
